The MTO Advantage: A Conversation with Director Karan Gupta

PRCL’s Multimodal Transport Operator (MTO) registration marks a significant milestone in our journey towards delivering integrated, end-to-end logistics solutions. Director Karan Gupta shares what this achievement means for our customers, our capabilities, and the future of PRCL.

PRCL has recently been awarded the MTO registration. For many outside the logistics industry, it may sound like just another certification. What makes this milestone truly significant?

It’s much more than a certification—it’s a strategic capability. MTO (Multimodal Transport Operator) registration formally recognizes PRCL as an operator that can undertake complete multimodal transportation under a single contract. In practical terms, it enables us to seamlessly integrate road, rail, sea, air, warehousing, customs clearance, and final-mile delivery into one cohesive logistics solution.

Today’s supply chains are increasingly interconnected. Customers are no longer looking for individual transportation providers; they are looking for partners who can manage complexity. Our MTO registration strengthens PRCL’s ability to deliver exactly that.

What changes for your customers now that PRCL operates as a registered Multimodal Transport Operator?

The biggest change is simplicity.

Traditionally, customers coordinate with multiple vendors—transporters, freight forwarders, customs brokers, warehouse operators, and shipping lines—each with separate documentation, timelines, and communication channels.

As an MTO, PRCL assumes responsibility for the entire movement of cargo across multiple modes of transport. Customers now benefit from a single point of accountability, a unified service experience, and better visibility across every stage of the shipment lifecycle.

Instead of managing vendors, customers can focus on managing their business.

One of the key advantages of MTO registration is the ability to issue a Multimodal Transport Document (MTD). Why is this important?

The Multimodal Transport Document is one of the most valuable aspects of the registration.

Rather than maintaining separate documents for each transportation leg, the MTD serves as a single contractual document covering the complete logistics journey across multiple modes. It provides consistency, improves document control, reduces administrative effort, and establishes clear responsibility for cargo movement under one operator. Under the Multimodal Transportation of Goods Act, the MTD is recognized as the governing document for multimodal transport contracts.

For customers operating complex global supply chains, this translates into greater operational efficiency and reduced documentation complexity.

Beyond operational convenience, does MTO registration improve supply chain performance?

Absolutely.

Supply chain efficiency isn’t only about moving cargo faster—it’s about reducing friction throughout the process.

When one organization manages multiple transportation legs, planning becomes more synchronized, operational handoffs become smoother, and information flows faster between stakeholders. This improves shipment visibility, minimizes coordination gaps, and enables quicker decision-making whenever disruptions occur.

Integrated logistics creates operational resilience, which has become increasingly important in today’s global trade environment.

From a business perspective, how does this milestone strengthen PRCL’s long-term vision?

Our vision has always been to evolve beyond conventional freight forwarding.

MTO registration enables us to expand vertically across the logistics value chain rather than participating in isolated segments. Whether it’s origin transportation, warehousing, customs processes, international freight, or destination delivery, PRCL can now offer customers a truly integrated solution.

This not only broadens our service portfolio but also strengthens long-term customer partnerships by becoming a strategic supply chain partner rather than simply a logistics service provider.

Finally, what message would you like to share with customers and partners as PRCL enters this new phase?

This achievement represents our commitment to continuously strengthening our capabilities.

The MTO registration is not the destination—it’s the foundation for the next phase of PRCL’s growth. We will continue investing in integrated logistics solutions, digital processes, operational excellence, and stronger global partnerships so that our customers can rely on a supply chain that is efficient, scalable, and future-ready.

Our objective remains unchanged: to simplify logistics while creating greater value for every customer we serve.
